Bisarno is a toponymal countryside referring to a very ancient place where the river Sieve (formerly Arno) split in two brunches. Three thousand years ago, this very small area in the Chianti hills - and historically mentioned as Bisarno (or Visarno), meaning literally “two brunches of Arno”, - was populated by Etruscan, the ancient population of Toscana. In this very place many Etruscan objects, from daily life, have been unburied and are in museums of Fiesole and Dicomano, nearby Pontassieve.
During the XIII century (1256), the very first tower of the building was built, to safeguard another building that was built the same age, a “gualchiera”, a fulling mill. Those were hard times and cities like Florence, Siena and Arezzo were continuously struggling each other. That tower is the first part of the complex as is today and you can easily recognize it being the central and highest part and from the different kind of stones that were used to build. Gualchiera or fulling mill was a water building for the work of wool (they capitalized the strength of the streams through water-mills to beat the wool). The fulling mill and control-tower were both owned by the Church of Firenze.
From XVII century, when the business of the wool got down and after a big flood that modified, to just one brunch, the stream of Sieve river, both the buildings were converted in fattorie, in farms, and were given the name of the area, Bisarno. With the development of the mezzadria (share-cropping system) the tower was added of staples, a kitchen with a big fireplace, some bedrooms and a courtyard outdoor. In the other part of the courtyard a barn, the actual "Il Fienile di Bisarno", and a pig/chicken and rabbit shed were also built. What once was only a tower to safeguard a factory down the river, became a big Tuscan country-house meant to guest many families that spent all their life in the house: it was very common for a country house to act as a sort of community (see the movie Novecento by Bertolucci).
In XX century Fattoria Bisarno was part of the property of Marquis Gondi and was devoted to the production of wine, that became the main business of Bisarno. In the Fifties Bisarno was acquired by Famiglia Inghirami, still today owner of the famous Chianti Rufina producer Fattoria di Grignano, whose Bisarno was one of the many farms that composed the property.
In 2015 Bisarno, a place of my childhood, where I used to bike around and to steal the cherries that were abundant in that area, was acquired by myself and my wife Laura. Our idea was to bring back to new life this astonishing and rich of history and charming building, by recreating a place where to grow our family and welcome friends and relatives like you in a very tasty and good-looking atmosphere, in our personal pursuit of beauty and happiness.
